Christmas Event 12 to 14 December 2025

We had all looked forward to this event with much anticipation and boy were we not disappointed. Everyone started to arrive at 2.00pm all keen I would imagine to Negotiate that bit of road from Draperstown to Shepherds Rest which is always busy and somewhat narrow. However we all made it and were met and warmly greeted by Geraldine and Anthony soon to be parked up and heaters on full blast. Electric may I add, full facilities here.

Now into the pub to sample that elusive charm which is almost exclusive to Shepherds Rest with its old time charm, heather brown floor tiles, blazing fire and an atmosphere which can't be bought. Colin was behind the bar with his excellent staff serving our increasingly noisy members.

Saturday morning turned out cold, wet and blustery but again cosy vans were the perfect sanctuary to rest up and build an appetite for the anticipated Christmas dinner. The fire of course was still blazing in the grate and this was availed of by quite a few.

6.30pm. And all started gathering in the dining area to await dinner which I won't dwell upon other than to say was excellent.  Those young girls serving were a credit to themselves with a combination of efficiency and good manners, well done I applaud you. Before the band started David Gilmore, Geraldine Brown and Margaret O'Donnell conducted the raffle with speedy efficiency that was necessary due to the very large number of prises. The music was now provided by a duo named “Loads o Craic” who soon had the floor filled with jivers, line dancers and the old sand shoe shufflers. It turned out to be a late night.

Sunday morning and back to the pub for coffee and formalities. I must say that Geraldine and Margaret who were behind the bar serving tea or coffee looked very much at home.  Thank you Colin for the use of this facility. There was quite an array of biscuits and cake all provided by the two ladies. The cake drew many requests as to the recipe which was readily supplied by Geraldine. P.S. Don't be fooled, Geraldine doesn't give up long held family secrets that easily. Thank you girls.

David now took the floor and in his inimitable style thanked again all involved in making this a very memorable occasion. He then went on to wish Joe McClune a happy birthday, well it happened last week so he is even older now. Noleen Fluke also celebrated a birthday (Which one not declared) Mary Cameron will be celebrating next week. (Note the name, seasonable). It was now that this was first time out for a new van proudly owned by Alan and Ashley Todd, congratulations and may you and your family have many happy miles in it, drive safely. Now on to the quiz. Even though we had very limited access to the internet on site Martin and Winnie Murphy took the honours and were presented with a lovely box of chocolates. (I did wonder why Martin kept asking to take Tanya for a walk to the top of the site).

Have a great Christmas everyone and we hope to see you at Lisburn RFC for the new year.
